Many beverages with chocolate are enjoyed around the world, from chocolate milk and hot cocoa to chocolate chai and flavored frappes.
Chocolate Milk: A Beloved Drink for All Ages
Chocolate milk has become a favorite drink for many chocolate lovers, as those who consume it get their cocoa fix while enjoying the health benefits from milk, such as vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus and riboflavin.
This flavored milk drink is rapidly becoming a fatality of the fight against childhood obesity. Many schools across the country have banned the serving of flavored milks for fear that they contain too much sugar.
The Los Angeles Unified School District became the nation’s largest to ban the drink in June 2011. Depending on the brand, some chocolate milks can contain over 10 percent of an adult’s recommended daily sugar and carbohydrate intake.
Hot Cocoa: A Favorite Drink on Cold Nights
When winter comes around, many people crave a delicious cup of hot cocoa. The drink is easy to make at home.
All you need is 2 cups powdered sugar, 1 cup cocoa, 2 and 1/2 cups powdered milk, 1 teaspoon of salt, 2 teaspoons corn starch and 4 to 6 cups of hot water. Combine the ingredients in a mixing bowl while you heat the water.
Fill half a mug with your mixture and pour in the hot water and stir with a spoon.
For added flavor, consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper. This spicy ingredient will add an unexpected, yet tasty, kick to your drink.
Chocolate Chai: A Twist on the Spicy, Indian Tea
Tea is one of the most prized drinks in India, thanks for its medicinal powers and delicious tastes. Chai tea is a unique blend of spices, such as cinnamon, cardamom and ginger, and is usually made with milk and tea leaves.
As chai tea grows in popularity around the world, it’s not surprising that the beverage would soon be blended with chocolate, one of the favorite sweet tastes in the world.
This beverage is often served warm in India, even on hot days, and is always extremely sweet. Still, this chocolate chai tastes great on ice.
Some companies make their chocolate chai by blending a chocolate-flavored black tea with cloves, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom and other spices.
Warmed milk gives the drink a distinct flavor and color. Many of the different types of cacao are infused into popular beverages like tea, coffee and milk.
